Weekly Recap: The Latest + Code for Gimme Hair Ties

It’s early and I’m sitting on the back porch, drinking coffee, listening the birds chirp, and writing this post while the kids are still snuggled up in bed. Each Sunday that I write this post I sit and reflect on the week or, in this case, reflect on the last two weeks since I took last week to unplug. Some of you may already know that my stepdaddy passed away, peacefully, on June 30th. Though the hospital had already revoked all visitation options due to Covid, they (thankfully) allowed my mom and all of his kids to come have time with him. We spent 48 hours there with him, loving on him, touching him, telling stories and praying over him. Though it was so incredibly heartbreaking, I will forever cherish the time in that hospital room. The day after he passed I woke up without sadness for the first time in a long time; I had so much peace knowing he was healthy in heaven. However, since then, each day is different. Some days I feel okay and other days (like today while sharing this story) I feel so very sad.

Though I wish he was still here, I am thankful for the 30 years we had with him. Also, his illness was a 12 year journey so I’m also thankful that we had 12 years to live life with him during this process. I am trying, daily, to choose happiness and to find joy. To reflect on the happy times and memories. However, I would be lying if I said I wasn’t sad for my mom. She lost her husband and best friend of 30+ years; I know this will be hard for her. We are all coming together to be there for her and with her as much as possible. My sisters and I are checking in on her daily!

Speaking of my mom, she turned 60 the week after he passed so we took her and all of my sisters and their families to our cabin in Oklahoma. It was the best weekend and exactly what we all needed. Togetherness. It was so incredibly special!

Thank you to everyone who kept my stepdad and my family in your prayers. I am forever grateful for you.
